I was surprised to find a pool tournament in progress. The room is large and has a nice friendly feel to it.Ī little video poker and casually watched. There are a few video poker tables here and there in the establishment. There's a bar near the entrance and a grill area as well near it staffed with helpful, friendly people. There are several dining tables for eating and a few bar stools at the bar. I spotted some old T-shirts they had on display from the 1970's of Warner Brothers Cartoon character Yosemite Sam. I was hard pressed to find the pork belly in the pie as promised. The shepherds pie was one of the strangest I have ever had - it wasn't horrible, but it was basically meat, gravy and melted cheese. The flavor was nice and it was cooked medium, but I could not believe how thin and measly the was the cut. My husband had the lamb and foie burger which was a little dry and medium, and my "sliver cut pork chop" was the thinnest slice of pork I have ever seen on the bone. The pate and pickled vegetables was nice - the pickle on the vegetables was very nice. I guess they are trying to compete as a gastropub, but in my opinion have a way to go. She was very attentive to our needs, and really there was nothing she could do about the noise. Our server was very nice and apologized for the noise, and said that she was hoping the group was rapping up in a half hour, which never happened. Needless to say, the sound echoed throughout the dining area and it was hard to have a conversation at your table - just a poor design. That really isn't the problem because it is mainly a bar with a dining area, but the private pool room is located right next to the dining area, and it is separated by a half wall and drapes. We did show up on a night when the private pool table area was occupied by a large group who were quite loud. young lady who showed us to an empty dining room. ![]() When you enter the establishment you enter the bar area and we were greeted by a nice. To start with, the stairs to enter the place are drab and dirty - kind of a funky musty smell. Overall however, really inventive and tasty food, definitely worth a return visit. I'm not looking for pretentiousness, just some nicer touches and finesse. If you're trying to build a following as a fine dining destination, which they deserve, then why not use table cloths, why not replace the silverware between courses and the table service was lax with servers repeatedly reaching over people to serve others rather than walking around. The only other comments have to do with the service. The wine pairings were expertly done and I was pleasantly surprised to see a Slovenian and Croatian selection on the menu and they and the others were wonderful. Virtually everything was delicious although I wasn't so fond of the sunchoke cream for the crab soufflé and the foie gras wasn't cleaned properly but it was still delicious. courses including oyster & cucumber chowder, Dungeness crab soufflé, surf & turf (scallop, chicken, egg), tuna & foie gras, and chocolate - seaweed sphere. ![]() If you're looking for a well-rounded economy sedan or hatchback, the 2006 Kia Spectra is definitely worth a test-drive. Although class leaders like the Civic and Mazda3 are still a few steps ahead of the Spectra when it comes to performance and refinement, we think highly of this Kia car. A vast selection of trays, bins, pockets and containers provides a spot for anything you happen to be carrying, while six large cupholders make road-trip dehydration a thing of the past. So do comfortable seats, and the Kia Spectra offers plenty of room for both front and rear occupants. Inside, the furnishings are nothing too exciting, but a simple control layout, above-average build and materials quality and standard side curtain airbags count for plenty in this segment. Handling is soft yet predictable with the standard suspension, but you can get a tauter setup by opting for the SX sedan or Spectra5 hatchback, which also provides extra body cladding and sportier interior trim. Ride quality is excellent for an economy car, though, as the suspension dutifully absorbs bumps and grooves. Unfortunately, the engine begins to run out of steam at midrange rpm and gets a bit noisy in the process - this is one of the few areas in which the Kia Spectra doesn't match up to the Civic and Corolla. Roomy, well equipped and for the most part pleasant to drive, the Spectra is worth the attention of anyone shopping for an affordable compact car.Ī 138-hp, 2.0-liter engine is standard, and it's tuned to deliver a healthy dose of torque right off the line, allowing the Kia car to get around town and merge into freeway traffic with ease. However, a groundbreaking redesign came midway through 2004 and established the Kia Spectra as the value leader in the economy car segment. Although decently equipped, neither the Spectra sedan nor the hatchback had the level of refinement or quality necessary to get the attention of Civic and Corolla buyers. In 2002, the Sephia sedan took the name "Spectra" as well. In 2000, Kia added a five-door hatchback companion called the Spectra in an effort to reach out to younger drivers. market date back to 1994 when the compact Sephia sedan was introduced. ![]() October - The Page County Heritage Festival offers family entertainment, a wide variety of hand-crafted goods, exhibits of operating antique farm machinery, and plenty of good country cooking. The ACA Memorial was commissioned by the city of Binghamton to honor the memories of those lost in a tragic shooting that took place at the American Civic Association Building in Binghamton on April 3, 2009. Location: Corner of East Clinton & Front Street, Binghamtonįunded by Donations of the Families of the Victimsĭonation from the Families and Friends of Victims Madeleine Cotts of BCK-IBI Group (Architect) and David Marsland (Project Manager) It is believed that a new time capsule was placed within the base of the sculpture including its previous contents from 1925, 1958, and objects from its unearthing in 1996. The time capsule, a copper box, showed signs of damage the items found within the capsule included newspapers from 1925, Spanish American War badges, and a letter from 1958 explaining that the time capsule had been found within the pedestal during the relocation and replaced. During the sculpture’s most recent relocation to Confluence Park in 1996, a time capsule was discovered within its pedestal. In 1958, the sculpture was moved six feet north and the circle diminished to accommodate the increase of traffic from highway construction the remaining circle was removed when the bridge was closed in 1969. It was initially part of a larger memorial plan, a Memorial Circle with a diameter of 260 feet at the intersection of Washington and Water Streets (later North Shore Drive) and purposely close to the World War Memorial Bridge of Broome County. Installed in 1924 and dedicated on July, 1925, during the annual parade of the United Spanish War Veterans Convention, Aitken’s sculpture has had an interesting post-installation history. This local pride extended even to song: “Throw a kiss, in memory of the men we still miss,” was a rhyme popular with children of the 1930s and 1940s and intended to keep the soldier’s memory alive. Indeed, the artist was determined to make the Broome County sculpture unique in every way. According to Tom Cawley, writing for the Binghamton Press and Leader newspaper in 1967, residents of Brooklyn, New York, wanted a Skirmisher of their very own, but Aitken refused them. The lively character resembles closely the men who charged forward into battle, aiming to capture the passion and dedication of the turn-of-the-century American soldier.īinghamton residents were quite proud of the Skirmisher when he was he was dedicated in 1925, and aimed to make sure the sculpture with its unique stance remained unique to the city. ![]() Aitken’s Skirmisher balances on one leg atop a nine-foot cylindrical pedestal. This unusual formation aimed to counter the increasing accuracy use of rifles in military conflict. Skirmishers were men deployed in a military formation called the skirmish line, which required each soldier to charge into battle at a distance of eighteen to twenty feet from each other. Aitken, who was also a veteran of the Spanish American War, decided against the typical stationary soldier, which he felt to be lifeless, and instead gave the Skirmisher his distinctive dynamic stance. Foster Disinger, a Binghamton based photographer and an officer of the Broome County Historical Society, enlisted the help of his friend Robert Aitken, an internationally recognized artist, for the project. ![]() Barber Camp III as a tribute to fellow soldiers.
